We spend half the year floating the river from Austin, and have seen everything under the sun when it comes to the San Marcos river. Here, let us answer some of the most frequently asked questions people have when it comes to a good river tubing experience.
What is River Tubing?
Picture this: a warm, sunny day in Austin, you're floating down a picturesque river, surrounded by natural beauty, with a cool beverage in hand. That's river tubing! It's a laid-back way to soak in the Texas sun while gently bobbing down one of our scenic rivers. Ideal for both relaxation and a bit of fun, it's an activity that suits everyone – from families to bachelor and bachelorette parties.
Choosing the Right River
Where Do We Float?
We love to float the San Marcos River, a gem known for its crystal-clear, spring-fed waters. It's convenient, clean, beautiful, and a must float river for Austin visitors. This river offers the perfect balance of serene floats and mild currents, making it suitable for all types of float crews. Other rivers to float around Austin would be the Comal or the Guadalupe.
How Long is the Adventure?
Typically, the entire excursion lasts about 5 - 6 hours, with about 3.5 hours of that being the actual river float. This duration includes your time on the river, as well as transportation to and from the site. It's a full-day activity, so prepare for plenty of sun and fun!
Planning Your Trip
What About Group Sizes?
River tubing caters to all group sizes. Whether you're a solo explorer or part of a larger group, there's room for everyone. Groups of 40+ such as company retreats should coordinate in advance for the best experience.
Will We Be with Other Parties?
Often, your tubing adventure will include other groups. It's a great way to meet new people and share in the joy of the river. While the bus is shared, with our trips your group is never combined with another, even if you float solo. You'll always have your own cooler and tubes.
Is It Family-Friendly?
The rivers around Austin are very family friendly, however it should be noted that on weekends the river can be a big party. Our tours are 18+.
Weather Concerns
Austin's weather can be unpredictable. Floating can be done in light rain, but any flow rate over 500cfs or large thunderstorms generally are not safe for a floating trip.
Cancellation Policy
Life happens! For cancellations made 48 hours in advance, there's a full refund. Weather-related cancellations are also fully refunded, ensuring a worry-free booking experience.
Preparing for Your Trip
What Should We Bring?
Essentials include non-glass beverages, snacks, sunscreen, water, and sunglasses. Waterproof phone cases are a must for those priceless river photos. Remember, glass and styrofoam are no-gos on the river.
What Does the Tour Provide?
The tour takes care of the essentials: coolers, ice, transportation, life jackets upon request, and of course, your tube! It's all about making your experience as hassle-free as possible.
Parking and Transportation
If you're driving, there's parking available, though rideshare is recommended. It's all about ease and convenience, so you can focus on the fun.
Texas Alcohol Laws
Drinking on the river is totally acceptable, and even part of the fun! But remember, no glass bottles. Also, in Texas, liquor is not sold on Sunday and beer isn't available until 10am, so plan ahead should you choose to float on a Sunday.
Dress Code and Valuables
Comfort is key! Wear clothes suitable for water and sun, and secure your valuables. We have an on-board lockbox for valuables so you can store your items safely and not have to worry about losing anything while you float!
Safety Protocols
Life Jackets: While not always mandatory, life jackets are recommended, especially for non-swimmers or children.
Stay Hydrated: The Texas heat can be intense. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
Sun Protection: Apply and reapply sunscreen throughout the day. A sunburn can quickly turn your fun day sour.
Maximizing Fun on the River
Socialize Responsibly: While it's great to make new friends, always be respectful of others' space and comfort levels.
Leave No Trace: Keep the river clean by packing out what you pack in. Respect the natural environment to ensure it stays beautiful for everyone.
Know Your Limits: Whether it's sun exposure, alcohol consumption, or physical activity, be mindful of your limits to enjoy the day safely.
For the First-Timers
Go with the Flow: Literally and figuratively. The river sets a relaxed pace, so sit back and enjoy.
Ask Questions: If you're unsure about anything, don't hesitate to ask your guide or fellow tubers.
